2015 Smart ForTwo spotted in production form

Production version of the Smart Fortwo city car spotted ahead of 2015 launch

The final production version of the Smart Fortwo has been spotted testing in Europe.

Heavy camouflage can still be seen on this test model, but the shorter and lower proportions of this Fortwo over the outgoing model are clear to see. However this model is believed to be considerably wider than the previous generation. This is part of a move to give the third-generation Fortwo class-leading levels of front impact protection.

Design elements from the 2011 ForVision concept have been incorporated into the new car, with this Fortwo losing its familar one-box design.

This model is expected to remain rear engined and rear-wheel drive only. The current 779cc three-cylinder diesel engine is expected to be dropped from the lineup in favour of an 87bhp pure electric motor, while the other engine option is likely to be a 0.9-litre three-cylinder direct-injection petrol unit, in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms.

The new Fortwo will form part of an expanded range of Smart models, which reportedly will include a new mini SUV and a replacement for the Forfour.
